3 Ways to Prevent Hearing Loss
From the moment you wake up to the time you sleep again, you are surrounded with various sounds – the morning rooster sound, loud alarm tones, cars honking, and more. It would be great if these sounds are like chocolates to your ears, but they aren’t. There are some noises or sounds you’ll want to protect yourself from in order to prevent hearing loss. In this article, we listed three ways how to take care of your ears.
1. Exercise.
Doing regular exercises helps keep our bodies fit and healthy. Now, the benefit of exercise is more than that. Recently, researchers have found that exercise appears to prevent age-related hearing loss.
As we age, we acquire certain illnesses and one of the most common is hearing loss. The latter affects approximately 70 percent of adults aged 70 and older. According to the findings published in the Journal of Neuroscience, age-related inflammation causes the damage of capillaries and cells. It was concluded that through exercising, we could be protected from such inflammation.
2. Follow the 60/60 rule.
Have you ever heard of the 60/60 rule? Say, you are listening to music or watching videos via headphones. It is recommended that you listen or watch at no more than 60 percent of the maximum volume, not exceeding 60 minutes or 1 hour a day. So, how do you determine if you are following this rule? You may simply check the volume bar in your phone or device, or you may ask someone if he can hear sounds coming from the headphones. If he answers yes, your sound volume is definitely high. Lower it down right away!
3. Clean your ears regularly.
It is very important to make your ears clean; otherwise, ear wax might pile up and worse, could lead to hearing loss. When ear wax build up and badly affects your hearing, you may suffer from impaction. You start to experience aching in the affected ear, dizziness, and cough. This condition can be prevented if you know how to properly clean your ears.
When cleaning your ears, you have to do it gently and safely. Use a damp cloth to remove the ear wax. You may also buy an earwax softener, which can be bought from pharmacies. However, if the earwax blockage seems severe, it is best to see the doctor.
Apply these three tips and you’ll be able to hear the beauty of life as long as you live.
